Sassoon Dock stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Mumbai, a city known for its dynamic blend of cultures, colours, and chaos. Within this kaleidoscope, the women of Sassoon Dock emerge as pivotal figures, their lives intertwined with the ebb and flow of the Arabian Sea.

This photo series seeks to shed light on their contributions, capturing moments of hard work, camaraderie, and the intricate dance of livelihood that defines the dock.

Each image in the project is carefully curated to bring forth the raw beauty and harsh realities faced by these women. The early morning light casting shadows on their faces, the intricate patterns of fish scales and baskets, the vibrant hues of the market, and the tireless energy that pulsates through Sassoon Dock — all captured through a lens that respects, admires, and values their contribution.

At Sassoon Dock, the women of Mumbai's Koli fishing community live a life of remarkable resilience and endurance, steeped in the age-old tradition of selling marine life.

From the early hours of dawn, these women can be seen bustling through the dock, skill-fully negotiating with buyers and tirelessly sorting through the day's catch. Their hands, weathered from years of labor, deftly handle fish, shrimp, and other seafood, ensuring that only the freshest and finest specimens make it to market.

Despite the physical demands and often harsh conditions, their spirit remains unbroken, driven by a deep connection to their heritage and the necessity to support their families.

The dock is not just a place of work but a vibrant community hub where stories are exchanged, traditions are upheld, and the collective strength of these women shines through. Their lives, though challenging, reflect a unique blend of hardship and tenacity, illustrating the vital role they play in sustaining both their households and the local economy.
