The Plague of Plastic

As the world’s capacity to deal with the fast rising output of disposable plastic goods becomes overwhelmed, plastic pollution has emerged as one of the most urgent environmental challenges.

But because of the conveniences that plastics provide, a throw -away culture has developed, which exposes the material’s negative aspects. Currently, 40 per cent of the plastic produced annually is made for single-use items. Many of these items —including plastic bags, food wrappers, and water bottles — have short shelf lives but may linger in the environment for hundreds of years.

Earth’s last sink for plastic waste, the oceans, receive the majority of it from the land. Major rivers operate as conveyor belts, gathering up debris as they flow downstream and carrying it to the ocean.

Efforts by individuals, communities, businesses, and governments must be made in unison to properly solve the complex issue of plastic pollution. Together, we can lessen the amount of plastic garbage we produce and save the environment for future generations.
